Spring Cleaning: Energy and Physical Cleansing

Spring Cleaning: Purify, Clean, Repeat

Spring has arrived, and with it comes an irresistible urge to clean. We air out rooms, scrub surfaces, and reorganize. Spring cleaning is a time-honoured tradition that dates back to ancient times, symbolizing the desire to start fresh. But what if we told you that the most transformative cleaning of the season isn’t visible to the naked eye?

A clean and tidy space already creates a sense of clarity and well-being. A clean, tidy, and energetically cleansed space is even better: it becomes the starting point for a true transition. Here is our step-by-step guide to purifying your home and welcoming spring.

1. Start by Tidying Up the Physical Space

Before you begin any energy cleansing, take care of your physical space. A cluttered environment overwhelms our senses and makes us feel overwhelmed. Every unnecessary object not only takes up physical space in your home, but also takes up space in your mind and energy space.

The principle is simple: anything you no longer use, give it away or sell it. Trust yourself and overcome the attachment and guilt that sometimes come with this step. Decluttering is a way of taking care of yourself. Energy flows more freely in an uncluttered space – and so do you.

Once the space is tidy and clean, open the windows wide. Let the air circulate and let in the spring light – it’s the simplest way to refresh the energy of a space. And if the sun shines directly through your windows, that’s the perfect spot to hang a window crystal. These crystals create little rainbows that brighten up your space while promoting the flow of energy according to feng shui principles. A lovely way to invite a little magic into your home!

2. Purify Your Space

Once the physical cleaning is complete, it’s time for energy cleansing. Various tools can be used.

White sage is traditionally used to purify spaces, a ritual that stems from the ancestral knowledge of Indigenous peoples. Palo Santo is a gentler alternative, with its slightly sweet, woody scent. Since its purifying effect is milder, it’s best used in combination with sage – or on its own if you find the scent of sage too strong.

In addition, incense such as benzoin, frankincense, or lavender can help deepen the purification process by setting a specific intention.

To purify the space:

  1. Light your incense stick;
  2. Blow gently to create an ember;
  3. Move slowly through each room;
  4. Focus on corners and areas where air circulation is poor;
  5. Direct the smoke into corners with your hand or a smudging feather;
  6. Open your windows so the smoke carries away what it cleans.

A practical tip: Be aware that your fire alarm might go off, since sage tends to produce a lot of smoke! Just make sure to keep the area well ventilated when fumigating near these systems.

3. Clean and Recharge Your Stones

Over time, your stones absorb vibrations from their surroundings. Even if you use selenite regularly or cleanse your crystals with smoke, an annual purification is still a good idea. Spring is the season of new beginnings and growth, making it the perfect time to purify and renew your energies.

To perform an energy cleansing, pour a layer of coarse salt into a large container and place a cloth or paper towel on top. Place your crystals on the cloth – never directly on the salt, as this could damage them.

Then set the container on a windowsill overnight: the moon will recharge them and restore their energy. Take this opportunity to place your selenites there as well, as they, too, recharge when exposed to moonlight.

4. Set Your Intentions for the New Season

Energy cleansing is about more than just cleaning. It’s also an opportunity to decide what you want to invite into your space and your life. After the energy cleansing, your space is receptive, ready to welcome whatever you choose to bring in.

Find a quiet place. Light a candle. Hold your favourite stone in your hands. Breathe. Think about what you want to leave behind and what you wish to welcome this spring.

You can also rearrange your crystals with intention, for example, by placing:

  • An amethyst in the bedroom: by calming the nervous system, it promotes deep sleep;
  • A blue chalcedony in the living room to foster gentle and kind interactions;
  • A black or pink tourmaline near the entrance to protect your space from negative thoughts and energies and invite kindness into your home.

5. Soak It All in

You’ve decluttered, cleansed, recharged, and set your intentions. Now, take a moment to simply be in your space. Take it all in. Feel the difference.

Above all, keep your intentions alive throughout the season – they need to be nurtured to fully take root. The energy of your space is reflected in your well-being, and vice versa: taking care of the former means taking care of the latter.
